Why do the Rangers wear a uniform?

The uniform is the most important outward identifying feature of all Scouts. It also helps new children to integrate in the group and serves to bridge social divides.

Why is military clothing not approved for Royal Rangers (combat wear, woodland camouflage, etc.)? And what is the issue with olive green?

We do not want to be associated with military groups as we have a different focus. Members of the public should be able to recognise instantly that we are a scouting organisation and not a paramilitary group. Wearing olive green trousers can be acceptable depending on the rest of the clothing worn with them. If they are worn with trainers and an RR baseball cap they create a different impression than if they are worn with combat boots, combat knife and skinhead hairstyle.

Why do we use the word “Kluft” and not the word “Uniform” in German to describe our gear?

Because the German word ‘Uniform’ is only used in connection with the military and government authorities in Germany.

May I also wear shirts made by other manufacturers as a uniform?

Yes, but they should not be too different. If you buy the uniform from the National Resources Office you will also be paying into the Ranger kitty. This also helps us to keep membership contributions down (and the uniform is the right quality too).

Who owns the RR star on the uniform?

The emblem belongs to the outpost and is to be given back on leaving the outpost!

How many RIDE awards can be sewn onto a uniform?

The RIDE badge is awarded from Expedition Ranger level. Only one badge is worn (the highest level in any given case). Adult leaders who have taken part in a RIDE service mission may also wear the RIDE badge.

Where exactly are the lilies sewn on (bronze, silver and gold lilies)?

They are sewn on in the centre of the left-hand front pocket. The highest level is worn at any given time and previous levels are removed.

Do I always have to remove the badges when I change to a new stage?

Yes, except in the case of Expedition Rangers who have not done the JLTC who may continue to wear their highest level of lily until they become a leader.

Which sew-on patches have to be taken off after attending the JLTC?

The lilies.

I am 20, a leader, and did the ‘scout’ training when I was an Expedition Ranger and have been wearing the badge ever since. Am I allowed to do this, including if I am no longer an Expedition Ranger?

You can still wear the ‘scout’ badge.

What’s the idea of having the name of the town above the outpost number?

Sew-on badges with town names are not compulsory but are acceptable. They are not to be regarded as the text version of the outpost number. They have to comply with the following requirements: blue material, yellow thread (like outpost number), no other colours, no border, just the name of the town in capital letters (not “Hamburg 2”), height 2 cm.

Can the "Royal Rangers" stripe be worn from the age of 18 or only after the NTC?

From the age of 18 - because it is a leadership stripe and not an NTC stripe.

Do I have to tuck the shirt in my trousers?

Yes, except for the ladies’ shirt (blouse).

In my girls’ team some wear the girls’ uniform (which is worn outside the trousers and some wear the normal uniform (which is tucked in). Is this okay? Or doesn’t it matter if the team clothing is a “mish-mash”?

A team with a mixture of uniforms is not bad but it does, of course, look better if everyone is wearing the same uniform.

Who is allowed to wear the “First-Aid” badge?

It identifies the first-aiders in the outpost. The outpost leader determines who wears the badge. They must be qualified experts with medical training (e.g. nurse, paramedic, …).

But the blue RR emblem can go on any pull-over jacket - for children or leaders - can’t it?

No. It is only leaders who are allowed to wear it, e.g. on the pull-over jacket. The silver/gold emblem is not mentioned in the uniform rules because it isn’t part of the actual uniform.
